Story Time!!!

Almost overshooting my intended destination deep into the recess of Lucban, Quezon somewhere in Quezon Province after an almost an-hour trip from Lucena Grand Terminal, Lucena City riding a modern jeep with fare of P 57.00 under the heat of the sun at 10:00 AM, we have arrived at the desired destination. Dotted alongside the main highway are the stores and carinderias running along the length of the road offering dizzying array of foods and culinary cuisines quite unique to Lucban, Quezon like the Lucban longganisa, which is actually a type of longganisa that looked like an ordinary one, packed into plastic with ten pieces of longganisa on it. The longganisa itself isn’t that long and I wasn’t able to taste or buy it, but nevertheless, it was a longganisa unlike the others. I wish I was able to taste it to experience the uniqueness of Lucban longganisa. After walking for few minutes along the line of the road and observing the environment around the hot weather of Lucban, Quezon, more cuisines are noticeable; the sweets like the “bibingka”, “yema”, some types of biscuits, “suman malagkit” and other tempting treats that invited the onlookers to look at the them and eat them if someone is tempted. That was a nice experience.

After some more minutes loitering and walking around the premises, I noticed a big tarpaulin displayed just in the front of premises that look like there would be a church not far off from the complex. It displayed “Kamay ni Hesus Healing Church”. The title…the environment where I was in….the number of people flocking at the gates just to go in the said place which is open at Sundays….this is it. The place I have wanted to go. The famed pilgrimage. The pilgrimage site called “Kamay ni Hesus” just across the road. Just looking at the compound from the outset, we could feel the solemnity of the place despite of many people visiting the place because when someone got inside the Kamay ni Hesus pilgrimage site, the place itself becomes more peaceful and quiet while walking inside the pilgrimage site. Crossing the road to reach the gates of the pilgrimage site, it was populated with women that sells different merchandises like Christ – themed bracelets, handkerchiefs with religious designs and other religious items, and other sellers were selling different “kakanins” like the white – glutinous rice wrapped in brown sugar which was delicious, donuts, and “suman malagkit” being sold on the pilgrimage on the pilgrimage premises and are excited to woo customers. I was able to slip past into the small entrance of the said site with other parishioners and because the wide gates of the site is only intended for entering and exiting cars, there was a lot of people entering and exiting the small entrance. But it is not really a problem because that expresses the desire of the people to experience the presence of our Lord when visiting the said place and reflect on how they lived their lives for the past years.

Walking toward the long, downhill road where we could see a pastoral office inside a big, homely house where the seminarists and brothers reside and the busts of the saints situated along the side of the road. While walking along and admiring the environment, I notice a big, imposing figure far – off from the pilgrimage site. It is situated….probably sixty kilometers away but the figure is so big it could be seen from the pilgrimage site; the famous Mt. Banahaw. Against the backdrop of the big pastoral office and the small pilgrimage site just in the front of the pastoral office where the slightly tall Mama Mary statue is situated near the road, Mt. Banahaw is watching over us. Her blue-greyish ghostly image that suggest how far the mountains is from us is imposing enough that we couldn’t help but to look at her magnificence and imagining what if we were at the top of Mt. Banahaw. Few minutes later, I have arrived to a church on the left of the road where the holy Mass is held there. It was somewhere around 11:00 AM when the mass is still held but we have other ample opportunity to join the next holy Mass, maybe somewhere around 2:00 PM or perhaps around 3:00 PM later. While observing the environment, the church is packed with parishioners and solemnly participated to the 11:00 AM church mass. The church itself is themed white and has a brick – red roof. Its worth mentioning that other buildings within the church’s premises has roofs colored brick – red, which ends up very good to look at from afar if we were able to climb to the statue to our Lord Jesus Christ on the top of hill, which I will be reaching for few hours from now. The name of the church is Kamay ni Hesus Healing Church, under the Diocese of Lucena.

There was also other church – like building just in the front of the church where the mass was held but it was closed. Few minutes later, I noticed other buildings worth exploring like the office where some religious items and merchandises are sold inside. Walking towards it, coming inside was pretty cold due to the air-conditioner blasting inside the office but it was also fun because the weather outside is pretty hot. Doing some window – shopping, the office is selling many religious items like the very small busts of or Lord Jesus Christ that would easily fit into the palm of our hand, inspiring books about our Lord, different versions of Bibles which anyone can choose, T – shirts with Kamay ni Hesus – themed designs, healing oils and religious crosses which reminds us how our God loved us and sent his only Son to save us and only His death is the answer for our salvation from this wretched world.

Walking for few paces later, standing on another gates leading for the hills of the very tall statue of our Lord Jesus Christ, extending His hands onto the heavens and inviting the visitors to come see Him, I stood before the gates and admiring the statue from afar, looking above the hills while thinking how tall might the hill may be, but whatever the answers are, it wouldn’t matter much because when we will eventually go to the top of the hill at the foot of the statue, all those things that might get us analytical would be gone and we will just enjoy the sights in the presence of our Lord. Getting inside the gates walking beside the foot of the hills, we could see a small pond where most of the parishioners will throw money on it. Looking like a wishing well but it is actually a large, greenish pond, many people would toss coins on it, perhaps for good luck and thanksgiving. I, too, wished for good luck and handed some coins for the pond. Moreover, we could see that there are assorted types on coins that have been thrown, most of those have values of a peso, with few ten – peso coins scattered around. Perhaps there would be twenty – peso coins in there but I hardly noticed. But it was pretty memorable, especially that we arrived in Lucban, Quezon.

Walking few paces more on the gentle zig-zag walking road of the hills of Kamay ni Hesus Pilgrimage site, as we walked alongside with it, the Stations of the Cross that displays the life of our Lord Jesus Christ leading to His nailing of the Cross. At the end of the walkways, there is a steep stairway made of stones that leads to an elevated walkway at the higher parts of the hill. After climbing the stony stairways and walking alongside the stony walkways where the inspiring life of our Lord Jesus Christ that calls us to be like Him in little ways like loving those who are unlovable, forgiving those who are unforgivable and sacrificing ourselves for the sake of others which is quite a hard thing to do for us mere mortals, we have reached the top of the hills after some few minutes…no…it took hours and energy before I actually reached the top of the hills. The overlooking sights of Quezon Province even if we were already at the middle of the hills is already beautiful enough, it is even more breathtaking when we set foot on the top of the hill, overlooking the entire Kamay ni Hesus pilgrimage site, seeing the people below that become like mere ants and the buildings surrounding it reduced to toys. That’s how beautiful the sights is, remembering that in the grand scheme of things, whatever we do barely matters that much due to how big and wonderful the world is. But since we are living in our own little worlds where everything matters, small problems becomes insurmountable and problematic, due probably to our own powerlessness and self-helplessness. Just how beautiful the world we are living in and reminding us that God has created everything according to His plan, just look at the birds chirping…the clouds floating…the sky tinted as blue…how attractive humans are….how beautiful the church is!. A broken broom can still be used by someone to clean a dirty room if that person is skillful enough to unleash her potential despite her flaws. Despite our shortcomings, we are still capable of loving and become empathetic to each other and the practice of choosing to be a good person despite reaching to a point that we won’t be able to get the chance to be good and it’s much easier to be angry and gloomy and having the rationale to be such, is a trait very difficult to achieve, but not impossible.

Staring at one direction to the edge of the hill and admiring how beautiful the sights are, other people are enjoying the sights too, taking pictures of one another with their families, friends and people who are in relationships, enjoying every moment that they can look back many years from now while I’m just here thinking about…nothing….and something at the same time, for the lack of a better word. At my back, the majestic statue of our Lord Jesus Christ, with His red – maroon clothes draping His body and His arms extending outward that is ready to receive grace from the Father, is a sight to behold. It seems that the entire purpose of building the pilgrimage site is to adore our God and accept Him as our friend and savior and the grand way to do this is to build a church and a statue dedicated to our God. But there is another site which is dedicated to Mama Mary, albeit, it was much smaller that the one found on the hills, but nevertheless, it still received importance because some people visits the smaller site dedicated to Virgin Mary.

After many hours admiring the sights and reflecting on what we have done for the past years…if they were any good…and there would be some lessons from it, I decided to join the 3:00 PM mass down on the foot of the hills.

And then a strong rain came.

But still…it just makes us adore Lord Jesus Christ and ask His guidance even more….:-)
